New Delhi: Recently, in pre-budget discussions, agriculture experts met Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman. According to reports, they have requested the Finance Minister to increase the amount of PM-Kisan installment from the current Rs 6,000 to Rs 8,000 per annum in the Union Budget. They have also demanded all subsidies to be given directly to farmers through Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) and additional funds for agricultural research in Budget 2024.

What is PM Kisan Samman Nidhi Yojana?

The PM-Kisan scheme was launched on 24 February 2019. It was launched to help meet the financial needs of landholding farmers. However, some conditions were also placed with it. Under the PM Kisan Yojana, eligible farmer families across the country receive Rs 6,000 annually in three installments every four months through Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT).

A total of over Rs 3.04 lakh crore has been paid so far to over 11 crore farmers across the country. With this disbursement, the total amount paid to beneficiaries since the program began will cross Rs 3.24 lakh crore. In fact, Narendra Modi’s first decision after taking over as Prime Minister for the third time was to release the 17th installment of PM Kisan Yojana to eligible farmers. This installment has benefited 9.3 crore farmers. It involves the distribution of about Rs 20,000 crore.

According to the interim budget documents, the government has allocated a budget of Rs 1.27 lakh crore to the Agriculture Ministry for the financial year 2024-25.
