Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif formally launched the Prime Minister’s Youth Chromebooks Scheme on October 25, 2026, in Islamabad, committing to distribute 500,000 refurbished Chromebooks and internet devices to talented students nationwide over the next two years.
Speaking at the Jinnah Convention Centre in Islamabad, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif recalled that previous PML-N governments distributed 600,000 laptops across a decade. The current administration now aims to deliver 500,000 Chromebooks within just two years.
At the opening of his address, the premier stated that his duty and the responsibility of the state require supplying the youth with modern technology so they can grow into the foremost builders of the country. He noted that education should stand as the chief priority for any administration, adding that the state is expanding Daanish Schools to offer tuition, lodging, and meals without any financial burden alongside modern facilities like smart boards and digital libraries.

Distributing Devices Across Regions
Unlike programs restricted solely to conventional universities, the new scheme extends its reach to schools and religious seminaries. The government stated that devices will be awarded purely on merit, without discrimination based on economic background or educational institution.

Connecting Students Through Expatriate Backing
Every Chromebook distributed under the scheme comes bundled with a school bag and an MiFi device. Chairman Prime Minister’s Youth Programme Rana Mashhood Ahmad Khan announced that high-speed internet connections will accompany the hardware, with each connection designed to benefit up to five individuals, effectively extending digital access to 2.5 million people.
The initiative has drawn backing from the private sector and expatriates. Rashid Minhas, Chairman of the Tokyo Technology Care Foundation and an overseas Pakistani supporter, signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the government to facilitate digital outreach for schools and religious seminaries. Minister for Federal Education and Professional Training Dr. Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui also addressed the ceremony, noting that the country’s young population serves as an invaluable asset rather than a liability when properly guided toward modern global trends.
