The National Police warned that drop-by-drop loans continue to add victims in the country, led mostly by foreign citizens, who look for small merchants to hook them into unpayable debts that usually end in extortion.

“There are three keys that should make me suspect a case of drip: immediate loan, without guarantors and without further processing than presenting your ID. To this I would add a loan with 20%, 30%, 40% interest and pay it daily”, General Óscar Arriola, head of the Criminal Investigation Directorate of the Peruvian National Police (PNP), told Tv Perú.

He explained that the lenders that lead these criminal organizations are generally of Colombian and Venezuelan origin.

“They have impressive publicity. Cards, posters and applications or apps that today are a quick channel (to make contact with their victims). They are looking for small businessmen, merchants who are in the markets, businesses, athletes, etc.”

He commented that with the passage of time this crime has been perfected and now the criminals cThey have applications that offer immediate loans, whose objective is that people can never afford them.

“By the time they are almost finishing paying, the plot enters that you have not paid the principal and it has only been pure interest, which you can refinance. In the app, 1,000 to 2,000 soles are deposited without consultation and people end up paying 18,000 to 20,000 soles. If you cannot pay, extortion and threats begin, with attempts against your life, your house, burning down your business”, alerted.

General Arriola encouraged citizens not to fall into this type of crime and to report them early, not only when there are threats

The Ministry of the Interior (Mininter) launched the campaign “The drop-by-drop loan is a crime”, with the aim of raising awareness and warning about the increase in dangerous “drop-by-drop” loans, an informal modality executed by criminal mafias that use the violence and extortion against those who access these credits and their families.

This initiative seeks to prevent natural persons, entrepreneurs, micro-entrepreneurs, among other citizens, from falling into the hands of mafias that offer money loans informally and with usurious and unpayable daily interest. In addition, the Peruvian National Police (PNP) has intensified operations to counteract these mafias and protect citizens.

In various operations carried out in recent weeks the arrest of 27 Colombians, 10 Venezuelans and two Peruvians related to this crime has been achieved, as well as the seizure of weapons and motorcycles used to intimidate their victims.
