Around 284 million people aged between 15 and 64 used some type of banned substance in 2020. The data is from the World Drug Report released by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC). This consumption consequently generates chemical dependency, resulting in some cases in death from overdose. In Brazil, for example, in the first half of 2023, there were more than 3,600 hospitalizations for drug overdoses, with 50 deaths. What is overdose? What are the signs and symptoms of excessive drug consumption? What should be done when witnessing an overdose? How important is drug treatment and detoxification?
