Podemos has been preparing its offensive against the King for days in the face of the most decisive moment given the possibility that governance falls into the hands of the PP. In an attempt to pressure Felipe VI until the last minute to appoint Pedro Sánchez as a candidate, the party led by Ione Belarra seeks to discredit the head of state.

Since last week, the purple party has tried to establish the argument that it is not the King who decides who should be the candidate who presents himself for an investiture. They accuse him of “borboning” and “meddling” in political life, despite the fact that his functions are manifest in article 99 and 64 of the Constitution.

According to the purple analysis, in their particular reading of the Constitution –in a very twisted way– they assure that the decision to present a candidate for the investiture corresponds to the president of the Congress of Deputies, Francina Armengol. The purple party resorts to article 64.1 of the Constitution, which ensures that the King’s acts “will be endorsed by the Prime Minister and, where appropriate, by the competent ministers. The proposal and appointment of the President of the Government, and the dissolution provided for in Article 99, will be endorsed by the President of Congress. That is why the purples assure that it should be Armengol who makes the last decision, with the aim of putting pressure on the King to name Pedro Sánchez as a candidate. However, countersigning, according to the RAE, is “authorizing an office or other document by means of the signature of a skilled person for it.” That is, it is the King who can make this decision.

According to purple leaders, by proposing the King to Feijóo, he starts “running the clock of electoral repetition” and this would mean “the greatest interference by the Monarchy in a parliamentary process since 1923.” Some even spoke yesterday that the PP, after proposing it by the King, would be proposing a “tamayazo” and that this would point directly to the King, for having proposed it. In this way, the purple party seeks to weaken the Monarch by his decision to propose to the investiture.
