Berlin: Tons of fish dying in the Oder River in Poland is causing concern. Polish firefighters have removed around 100 tons of dead fish from the river since Friday. More than 500 firemen have been assigned to remove the fish.

Polish authorities say that this is the first time such a mission has been carried out in a river. Doubling the concern is that the cause of the fish die-off cannot be ascertained. Officials suspect that some kind of toxicity is killing the fish. For this, river water samples have been sent to laboratories in the Czech Republic, the Netherlands and Britain.

The Oder River also flows through Germany. German municipalities have issued warnings that no one should bathe or fish in the river. The 840 km long Oder River originates in the Czech Republic and empties into the Baltic Sea along the German and Polish borders. Observers say mass die-offs of fish will adversely affect the habitat of the river.

Poland has announced a $180,000 reward for anyone who can help find those responsible for the environmental disaster. Authorities currently suspect chemical waste. However, its presence has not been detected in the tests conducted so far. But the salt content was found to be high.

It is also suspected that highly chlorinated factory effluents have mixed with the river. It was on July 28 that the local residents first noticed the fish dying in the river. There is criticism that the authorities did not intervene in time. Germany also accuses the Polish government of not informing them.

In recent times, the Oder, a relatively fresh water river, had 40 species of fish. But there are huge fishes up to 40 cm in size living in the river.
