Poland, Chamber passes controversial media law

by time news

Time.news – Polish parliamentarians have given the green light to the media bill that according to its detractors threatens press freedom and will have a negative impact on relations with the United States.

The new legislation – approved by the House with 228 votes in favor, 216 against and 10 abstentions and which requires the signature of the president – will force the American company Discovery Inc., owner of the largest private television network in Poland, Tvn, to sell its assets. in the country: in fact, the law prevents non-European entities from holding the majority shareholding and therefore the control of Polish media.

In practice, the only ‘victim’ would be Tvn, which is also referred to by the all-news channel Tvn24, very critical of the right-wing nationalist government of Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki.
