For ten days, Kifah (36) and his four companions hid from the border troops in the Hajnówka forest. The food supplies ran out four days ago. Since then they have eaten nothing but a few cobs of corn from the fields.

Then came the rain, the cold – minus 2 degrees at night. They did not dare to make a fire. The wood was soaked anyway. Villagers discovered the five men in the thicket on Saturday evening.

Paramedics gave them silver aluminum blankets against hypothermia, infusions against malnutrition and the lack of water.

Kifah repeatedly bursts into tears when he tells the BILD reporters where he comes from: from Syria, then via Beirut by plane to Minsk. From there with minibuses to the border between Belarus and Poland.
