Washington will remain Europe’s strategic partner regardless of the results of the upcoming US presidential elections.
As reported by Day.Az with reference to TASS, this opinion was expressed by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Poland Radoslaw Sikorski.
“The United States is and will be a strategic partner of Europe, no matter who is in the White House next year. And no matter who wins, [европейским странам] “We need to take on more responsibility for Europe’s defense and security,” he told the European publication Politico. The minister also called on Europeans to “prepare for change,” since, in his opinion, Asia will become one of the key foreign policy priorities of the United States. Against this background, European politicians must explain to their allies in the United States that as long as Europe allegedly “feels a Russian threat,” it will not be able to fully cooperate with Washington in the Asian region.
The US presidential election will be held on November 5. The Democrats were expected to be represented by US President Joe Biden, whose candidacy was expected to be confirmed at the national convention in Chicago, Illinois, scheduled for August 19-22. However, after his disastrous performance in the debate with Republican Donald Trump on June 27, calls for Biden to abandon further attempts to retain the post have become increasingly loud among Democrats. On July 21, Biden decided to drop out of the race. He supported the Democratic Party’s nomination for the post of head of state, Vice President Kamala Harris.
On June 13, the official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova, stated that NATO has long been preparing for a potential armed conflict with Russia. According to her, the alliance countries motivate their activities by the need to prepare to repel the imaginary “Russian threat.” Zakharova emphasized that military budgets are being pumped up, the economies of NATO countries are being completely militarized, while Russia has not had and does not have any aggressive plans against NATO or its members.
