Poland Reports 18 Deaths in Legionnaires’ Disease Outbreak in Cheshunt

WARSAW, Sept. 1 (Xinhua) — Poland’s local sanitation and epidemiological service revealed on Thursday that the death toll from the Legionnaires’ disease outbreak in the city of Cheshunt has increased to 18.

Legionnaires’ disease is a form of pneumonia caused by Legionella bacteria. The pathogenic bacteria were detected in 157 hospitalized patients, out of which nine men and nine women have died from the disease. The deceased individuals were between the ages of 53 and 98 and had other underlying health conditions.

The World Health Organization (WHO) states that Legionnaires’ disease can also result in severe pneumonia. The most common form of transmission is inhalation of contaminated airborne aerosols, which can form together with water droplets, jets, or smog originating from contaminated water sources.

Local authorities are currently investigating the source of the outbreak and taking measures to prevent further infection. The affected area in Cheshunt has been closely monitored, and public health guidelines are being followed to mitigate the spread of the disease.

Residents are urged to take necessary precautions, such as maintaining good personal hygiene, avoiding exposure to water aerosols from unknown sources, and seeking immediate medical attention if they experience symptoms such as high fever, cough, shortness of breath, muscle aches, and headaches.

Legionnaires’ disease outbreaks are rare but can be severe. Proper sanitation and regular maintenance of water systems are vital in preventing the growth and spread of Legionella bacteria. Health authorities in Poland are working tirelessly to manage the current outbreak and ensure the safety and well-being of the public.

Further updates on the investigation and preventive measures will be provided as more information becomes available.
