“Police Anti-Corruption Center” inaugurated What about it? Here we tell you

This Tuesday, the “Police Anti-Corruption Center 1531” located on 10th Street was opened. 10-00 La Pedrera street and avenue, Cipresales neighborhood, in zone 6 of the capital. According to what was announced, this Anti-Corruption Center will allow the population to confidently report inappropriate or anomalous actions carried out by PNC agents in the performance of their duties.

Perspective Writing

This Police Anti-Corruption Center will have a number 1531 to receive complaints. To staff this call center, between 10 and 12 people are assigned to attend 24 hours a day and the Minister of the Interior, Francisco Jiménez, together with the Ambassador of the United States, Tobin Bradley, and the director general of the National Civil Police are assigned (PNC). ), David Cutodio Boteo.

US SUPPORT

For his part, Ambassador Tobin Bradley said that he is happy with the implementation of this center and that the United States had a vision that Guatemala will be much safer and richer in the fight against corruption, which is an activity that goes beyond the limits.

REORGANIZATION OF FORCE

Minister Jiménez explained that they had designed a security strategy to provide operational results in the first months of this year, implying that the force would be reorganized. In this sense, despite the limited conditions, the objective was decided to include primarily crimes and extortion.

“Those who answer the calls will be supported with technology that will allow them to respond appropriately to the complaints of the population,” said Custodio.

Jiménez also said that they considered the need for institutional strengthening in the PNC, which is at the service of the population and is now the most important institution in the State, because the police are the ones who have contact with the population every day, to ensure that. to enforce the law and exercise authority in the streets.

“It must be clear that a public servant who has authority must have the ability (to understand) that there are also limits to the exercise of that authority. “We do not have absolute authority or power in the operation of that service,” he said.

The Minister also recalled that the State was jointly elected in recent years, pointing out that it was appropriated by a corrupt logic, where the most essential thing, that is the public interest, was sacrificed for the private interest. some of them take advantage of that authority and position to enrich themselves.

The PNC and public servants in the Ministry of the Interior exercise inexorable authority. There are times when we have to use force, but we cannot do it simply because we simply feel it, there are protocols, there are criteria for police action.

For that reason, the General Inspectorate of the PNC must ensure that authority is used adequately. The responsibility as PNC agents is very strong, it is not a small thing, but our objective is to strengthen internal controls to provide a better service to the population, said Jiménez.

OFFICIAL FIGURES

From January 15 until now, 92 agents have been arrested for various crimes such as kidnapping, coercion and bribery and about 2,000 agents have been sanctioned administratively, the Interior Minister said.

He also explained that they are working in the inspection because it has a decisive role in the work done by the agents). “If there are no internal controls, there is no message that there are limits to the exercise of authority,” he said.
