Police are appealing for public information following a fatal Saturday morning crash on Te Puke Highway in the Bay of Plenty. A white 2005 Toyota Caldina crashed near Rangiuru Road at 10.50am on October 10, 2026, leaving one person dead at the scene and another seriously injured.

Emergency services rushed to the Te Puke Highway corridor shortly before 11am following reports of critical injuries near the intersection with Rangiuru Road. Police confirmed that the collision involved a single vehicle.

A nearby resident described hearing the impact and discovering the wreckage, noting that their pets reacted instantly. I heard it happen but didn’t realise what it was. My dogs went bananas, the resident said. After walking closer, they found the aftermath looked bad and chose to keep their distance to avoid anything distressing. The car was suspended in a tree but thankfully it didn’t end up in the river, the resident added.

Emergency Response and Hospital Transport at Rangiuru Road

Hato Hone St John dispatched multiple resources after receiving an alert at 10.53am, including an ambulance, a rapid response unit, an operations manager, and a rescue helicopter according to emergency dispatch logs. Flight tracking data from the area captured the rescue helicopter departing the scene shortly after midday, around 12.05pm.

Medical personnel treated one patient at the location before a road ambulance transported them to Tauranga Hospital in a serious condition. Authorities confirmed that one individual was pronounced deceased at the crash site.

Police Investigation into the White Toyota Caldina on Brown Road

Investigators are focusing their inquiry on the moments leading up to the incident. Detective Senior Sergeant Natalie Flowerdew-Brown stated that a white 2005 Toyota Caldina was being driven down Brown Road at high speed before crashing near the Te Puke Highway intersection.

The New Zealand Police Serious Crash Unit deployed personnel to examine the scene, and the highway remained closed with local diversions in place. Law enforcement agencies have urged motorists to avoid the corridor and expect delays.

Public Appeal for Witnesses and Dashcam Footage

Investigators have asked anyone who witnessed the collision or observed the vehicle traveling in the surrounding area prior to 10.50am to come forward. Police requested dashcam or CCTV footage that might capture the white Toyota Caldina’s movements.
