On Sunday, Estonian police officers in the border town of Valga detained 21 foreigners who illegally entered the territory of the European Union.

The Police and Border Guard Board reported this to BNS. At about 3 p.m., a police patrol noticed a group of foreigners at a bus stop in Valga. The police checked their documents and found out that they entered the EU illegally. Among them were 14 men, five women and two children. Ambulance doctors checked their health.

According to preliminary information, a group of 21 people entered Estonia through Latvia. It is currently being established where they entered the EU from and where they wanted to go.

The head of the operational department of the Lõuna Prefecture, Kert Kotkas, said that in the last few weeks Latvia has seen a very strong influx of illegal migrants on the border with Belarus, where hundreds of illegal border crossings have been blocked.

“We are in contact with colleagues in Latvia and Lithuania and are exchanging information about what is happening. Today’s incident cannot yet be clearly linked to the situation in Latvia, but police officers are currently clarifying the circumstances and conducting a procedural check of the foreigners detained in Valga in order to find out their exact migration route,” explained Kotkas.

Estonian police have increased their presence on the southern border, as well as at bus stations and ports through which illegal migrants may pass.
