Maniac Mooca

The São Paulo Civil Police is looking for a man known as “red cap maniac” or “car maniac” or Mooca Maniac, after he attacked several women in the eastern zone of the capital city. The vehicle used in the crimes, a silver Uno without license plates, was found parked in the Sapopemba region.

The man has been identified and is being investigated for the arrest of at least seven women in one day. The victims are between 11 and 34 years old and were walking alone through the streets of Mooca and Sapopemba.

A knife, screwdriver and clothes representing a football team were found inside the car. The car was found abandoned in a community in the region.

Five women have already filed complaints against the suspect, who was filmed trying to drag the victims into his car. The attacks took place in different parts of the east, and although at least four women have reported the incidents, it is believed that there could be more victims. All the women managed to escape the attacks.

The Civil Police say they have already identified the man, but he is still at large. The investigations are being conducted by the 57th Police District. Deputy Ricardo Salvatore, who is responsible for the case, confirmed that the vehicle was found in the eastern zone of São Paulo.

Police also asked for the suspect to be temporarily detained while they gather evidence, including security camera footage. Videos circulating on social media show a man in a red coat and cap waiting for the victims.

The first reports of attacks began when a 16-year-old girl was approached in front of a school on Rua Manuel Onha, in Vila Oratório, on September 13. She said the man announced “robbery” and threatened her, but managed to escape. Since then, more women have come forward to report similar experiences, all occurring on the same date and in the same region.

How to report

The police recommend that, in the event of violence or aggression, people call 190. Information about the suspect can be shared on Hotline 181, which guarantees anonymity. In addition, cases of domestic violence can be reported by calling 180 — the Women’s Service Center, and by Dialing 100, which investigates violations of human rights.
