A suspect in shooting two Orlando, Florida (USA) police officers during a traffic stop, seriously injuring the officers, was killed by law enforcement after a chase that ended at a hotel in the city where Disney parks are located, authorities reported.
Daton Shimondrea Viel, 28, was found in a hotel near the Universal Studios tourist areawhere he was killed this Saturday by a SWAT team (specialized units in special interventions) of the Orlando Police, the head of the local institution, Eric Smith, reported at a press conference.
The authorities pointed out that the suspect barricaded himself inside the Holiday Inn hotel in Caravan Courtnear the Universal Orlando complex, and that he began shooting at SWAT team members before the team shot and killed him.
The Miami-Dade Police Department (MDPD) was searching for Viel in connection with a homicide that occurred in that county when, in a traffic stop, one of the occupants of the vehicle opened fire on the officers, then stole another vehicle and began a chase, Smith reported.
The officers were rushed to a nearby hospital, where they are currently in critical condition, local media Spectrun News 13 reported today.
Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer said on social media that he visited the officers and their families this morning.
“Our police officers risk their lives every day to keep our community safe. Two @OrlandoPolice were shot last night during a proactive stop doing just that. I visited with the officers and their families this morning and shared the support of our community.Dyer wrote on the X social network, formerly Twitter.
For his part, the governor of Florida, Ron DeSantis, said on the same platform that, together with the first lady, Casey DeSantis, he is “praying” for the two officers.
According to the authorities, the second suspect was not directly involved in the officers’ shooting.
The two Orlando police officers injured in the shooting are in critical condition but are recovering, Smith said without identifying them.
