The National Police of Peru raised from 6 to 10 the total number of people arrested during the anti-government protests that took place on Wednesday in the historic center of Lima, as reported by the entity on Thursday (07.20.2023).

“There have been more or less 10 detainees together,” General Roger Pérez, director of the Lima Police Region, told the RPP radio station.

He also estimated that “close to a thousand people” arriving from other regions of the country joined the marches in the center of Lima, where he considered that some 4,500 people gathered, out of a total of 21,000 protesters who participated in the nationwide protest, according to government data.

The demonstrations resumed after several months of pause, after taking place between last December and March, with a balance of 49 people killed in clashes with the security forces.

The protesters demand the resignation of Boluarte, the closure of Congress and the calling of new general elections and a Constituent Assembly.

On Wednesday, the blockade of up to 12 highways was reported in various regions of the country, mainly in the south, as well as peaceful demonstrations that toured several cities.

The largest protest took place in Lima, where thousands gathered in the city center and marched through the streets, leading to brief, one-off clashes overnight with the National Police.

The Ministry of the Interior indicated that six civilians and two police officers were injured in these clashes, in addition to the 10 detainees, information that was confirmed by the Ombudsman’s Office.

This Thursday, President Boluarte reiterated her call for dialogue to opposition organizations and citizens.

Social, political and civil organizations indicate that they will continue the protest in the coming days and, for now, in addition to the blockade of the international bridge that links Peru with Bolivia, in the southern region of Puno, a new protest march has been announced for this Thursday in the southern region of Apurímac and another demonstration in Lima for Saturday.

In addition, the General Confederation of Workers of Peru (CGTP) reported that it will meet with the National Unitary Command of Struggle (CNUL) to evaluate the following actions, which may include a new day of protest from July 27 to 29, the dates on which the Peruvian independence festivities are celebrated.
