Bogotá experienced moments of tension yesterday in the vicinity of the National University, when hooded protesters clashed with units of the UNDMO (Dialogue and Maintenance of Order Unit).

In the midst of these clashes, a police officer was caught on video shooting a firearm at protesters.apparently in violation of established protocols for handling protests.

On 26th Avenue, where a uniformed National Police officer, after getting out of his patrol car and using it as a shield, opened fire on the protesters who were attacking him. The images broadcast by several media outlets showed the police officer firing towards the north, the direction in which the protesters were fleeing. In the videos, the shots and the explosions of other devices can be clearly heard.

The mayor of Bogotá, Carlos Fernando Galán, spoke out about the events: “We had early information about possible blockades in front of the National University, so we implemented a plan with the District’s management team. When it was determined that dialogue was not viable due to the violence, the UNDMO intervened.”

This incident has generated a strong reaction in public opinion, questioning the measures taken by the police and the respect for protocols for action in protest situations. Citizens are demanding an investigation to clarify what happened and determine the corresponding responsibilities.
