The body of policeman Vijayan, who was attacked by mobs in Chennai’s Alandur, was cremated with 21 rounds of police honors in his hometown.
Vijayan is the son of Chettu-Vennila couple from Sangalivadi village next to Arura in Dharmapuri district. He joined the Tamil Nadu Police as a second grade constable a few years ago. Vijayan, who was working as a constable in Puduppet, Chennai, fell in love with and married Meenakshi from Marakanam area three years ago. Vijayan, who lived with his family in Alandur, Chennai, gave birth to a baby girl only five months ago.
In this situation, on the night of the 9th last night, when he was returning from Palavanthangal market with his brother-in-law Vasudevan, Ajmal contacted Vijayan on his cell phone. Ajmal then told him that he was being attacked by unknown persons at Alandur Kannan Colony grounds and that he should come and save him immediately. After this, it is said that both of them went to the spot and beat up the gang. Then the gang attacked policemen Vijayan and Vasudevan. In this, the policeman Vijayan suffered a severe injury on his forehead and fell down.
Seeing this, the mob ran away from the place. Vijayan, who was lying unconscious, was taken to the nearest government hospital. But it is said that the government refused to admit him to the hospital due to low pulse rate. Following this, he was admitted to a private hospital in Palavanthangal area.
After that the constable informed Vijayan’s parents and wife. But instead of saying that the mob attacked, they said that there was an accident. Also the wife and parents who came to the hospital informed the relatives about the accident. But as he was unconscious, the police station was informed and he was shifted to Rajaji Government Hospital for treatment. The Parangimalai police registered a case of attempted murder and arrested 4 persons namely Ajith, Vinod, Vivek and Ravikumar, who assaulted the policeman, yesterday and put them in jail.
But the guard Vijayan has been unconscious for two days. In this case, Rajaji died last night at the Government General Hospital. The post-mortem was completed at the Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital and the body was taken to his hometown Arur, next to Sankiwadi village under police protection. Seeing Vijayan’s body, the villagers and relatives started crying. Vijayan’s body was kept there for relatives and public to pay their respects. Following this, the funeral rites were performed and the body of police constable Vijayan was cremated with 21 shots fired in the cemetery with full respect of the police department. With the loss of the guard Vijayan, the entire village is plunged into great sadness.
It is also speculated that policeman Vijayan may have been beaten to death by Vasudevan and his friends. Because Ajmal and Vasudevan, who called on the phone, were not even slightly injured. It is also said that when Vijayan was hit and fell down, he did not take him to the hospital and delayed for more than an hour. Because of this, due to the suspicion on them, a proper investigation should be conducted and the relatives of police Vijayan’s wife Meenakshi, who has lost her romantic husband and is left with a five-month-old child, should be given financial support and job opportunities.
