During the day from Friday 30 to Saturday 31 August 2024, the police station in the rural commune of Tarambaly, located 17 km from the town of Labé, was vandalized by a group of angry young people. According to our information, it all started with the arrest of young people accused of selling and consuming Indian hemp by the communes. Furious, their friends stormed the police station before turning it upside down. Reached by telephone, the president of the special delegation confirmed this attack, while specifying that one of the accused was arrested and the remains are actively being sought.
“These are young people from neighboring sub-prefectures, members of an organization of players of games of chance, consumption of Indian hemp, and sale of this drug, who meet at the football field, who are behind this situation. Well before my appointment, we were fighting against this scourge about 5 years ago. When they learned that I am the president of the special delegation, they changed location. In their game, there are hired motorcycle taxis who put their motorcycles as collateral. In the process, this situation hurts the owner and his driver. Once informed, we banned this game, while threatening to arrest the offenders. So the day before yesterday, all night, they were causing nocturnal disturbances, in the morning when we learned this news, we went with the municipal guard to their place, where three (3) of them were arrested. Afterwards, the officers started looking for the organizer of these games. It was in this situation that the remaining youths came to storm the premises of the police station. They chased away the officers who were posted there by throwing stones. After they broke the door of the violin, they freed the three detainees. When the officers returned, the youths molested them. One of them received blows to the head. According to him, they used a chair. The second received a blow to the stomach with a brick,” says Salman Baldé, president of the special delegation.
Overwhelmed by events, the local authorities of Tarambaly called in officers from the central police of Labé for reinforcements. One person has already been arrested.
“In the process, the sub-prefect informed the central police station. For my part, I informed the prefectural authorities on the course of action to take, given that our force was limited, because of the injuries recorded among our officers. When the central police officers arrived, there was only one of the young people here, he had told him that he would not flee. He was sent to the central police station. For the moment, we are looking for the rest of the group,” concluded Salman Baldé.
