Madurai: A policeman on patrol was trapped in the rubble of a 110-year-old building in Madurai when it collapsed. Another guard has been admitted to hospital in critical condition.

Saravanan and Kannan, both constables of the Madurai Bailiffs’ Police Station, were on night patrol. At that time, tea was being sold at 1.30 am through a tea stall in front of the shop on Lower Main Street.

So as the crowd was high in the area, the 110-year-old building owned by Mohammed Idris in the area suddenly collapsed while the guards were standing in the same area telling the crowd to disperse.

Policeman Saravanan was trapped in the rubble of the building and died on the spot. Another policeman Kannan was admitted to a private hospital with serious injuries.

Lighthouse police arrived at the scene and are investigating 3 people, including the building owner Idris and the tenant.

Following this, Municipal Police Commissioner Prem Anand Sinha visited the spot and conducted an investigation.
