The police station is located 336 km east of Colombo in the Tirukovil area of the Ampara district.
The shooting took place at the police station at 11.40 pm on the 24th. Four police officers were killed in the shooting.
The shooting was carried out by a man who worked as a policeman at the same police station. The policeman surrendered at another police station after shooting 4 people.
Two T-56 rifles and ammunition were seized from him. Police spokesman Nihal Talduwa said he was later arrested.
Three more policemen were injured in the shooting. The injured include the officer in charge of the police station. It is learned that he fired in anger for refusing to ask for leave.
A police team led by senior officers has been set up to investigate the incident. The police station at the temple where the incident took place is located in the hall where the battle between the Sri Lankan Army and the LTTE took place. The war ended here in 2009. After that the area seemed quiet. Now the area is in turmoil as 4 policemen have been shot dead.
