Health authorities in Burkina Faso launched a polio vaccination campaign on Saturday for the benefit of more than 5 million children under the age of five.

This campaign against poliomyelitis is organized by the Ministry of Health and Public Hygiene, with the support of the World Health Organization (WHO), the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) and the International Rotary Association, according to a WHO press release published on Saturday. .

It will be possible to immunize approximately 5.26 million children between 0 and 59 months of age in the country’s 70 health districts.

In addition, it is accompanied by a malnutrition screening campaign for children aged between 6 and 59 months and will extend until next Monday, May 13, throughout the entire national territory.

Poliomyelitis is a highly contagious viral disease that mainly affects children under 5 years of age. A child with polio can infect more than 200 other people around him and the virus is transmitted from person to person, mainly through the fecal-oral route, contaminated water or food, according to the WHO.
