Polisario criticizes Morocco for saying at the UN that “there is no alternative” to Saharawi autonomy

The Polisario Front criticized this Wednesday the statements of Morocco’s representative to the UN, Omar Hilale, who assured in his speech before the General Assembly that “there is no alternative to the autonomy” of Western Sahara as a territory of Morocco.

“(Hilale’s statements) represent a contempt for the intelligence of the member states, due to the lies and distortions they include regarding the issue of Western Sahara, which has been part of the Agenda of the General Assembly and its institutions since 1963. as a matter of decolonization,” said the Polisario representative to the UN, Sidi Mohamed Omar.

Furthermore, Omar explained that United Nations resolutions recognize “the inalienable right of the Sahrawi people to self-determination and independence,” according to the Saharawi news agency SPS.

In this sense, he has reiterated that Morocco’s position demonstrates its intention to “ignore International Law” and not wanting to reach a “peaceful, just and lasting solution to the issue of decolonization.”

During his speech before the Assembly, the Moroccan representative described the conflict as “invented” and that autonomy within Moroccan territory was the “only alternative.”
