Polish government enforces controversial media law

by time news

In Poland, the ruling right-wing conservatives want to enforce the media law, which has also been criticized internationally, even after it has been rejected by the Senate. The Senate’s vote should be overruled, announced chief Jaroslaw Kaczynski, head of the ruling PiS party (Law and Justice) on Wednesday. “The law is expected to be voted on during the next session (of parliament), before the end of September,” he told the official PAP news agency.

US Secretary of State Blinken is critical of the law

The background to the proposed law are allegations by the PiS that media owned by foreigners would report biased against the government. The new law is intended to ensure fair reporting from the point of view of the PiS. The Media Act aims to tighten the rules for foreign participation in Polish media.

Opponents of the measure see the law as an attempt to take action against the government-critical broadcaster TVN24, which belongs to the US group Discovery. US Secretary of State Antony Blinken was “deeply concerned” about the plans. Criticism had also come from the EU Commission.
