The Department of Education encourages all parents to vote for members of District Boards of Education and Citywide Boards.

The councils, in conjunction with the superintendent, shape the education policies of the districts and the city. Council members support parents’ activities in contact with the Department of Education, as well as monitor the situation in schools by participating in PTA or SLT meetings. They draw attention to irregularities and support in the selection of projects implemented from municipal funds intended for the revitalization of schools. They also evaluate the work of superintendents, deciding on their further work in the district, and give opinions on persons applying for this place in the competition. Elected parent representatives will begin their term of office on July 1, 2023. The full term will end in June 2025. Each council will also be joined by two representatives nominated by the district mayors for better cooperation between the council and local administration, and two candidates will be elected to the City Councils by JD Williams , holding the office of NYC Public Advocate.
