The Political Commission of the Legislative Assembly has issued a favorable opinion for the plenary session to proceed with the election of the regular and alternate magistrates of the Supreme Electoral Tribunal (TSE). This decision was made after the deputies interviewed the second shortlist presented by the ARENA party, because the first did not meet the legal requirements to hold the position.
The new shortlist is made up of Cecilia María Marroquín Castro, Máximo Alberto Zaldívar Calderón, and Julio César Deras Oliva as regular magistrates, and María Ofelia Landaverde Dubón, Irvin Antonio Castillo, and Elmo Atilio Pereira Quintanilla as substitutes.
Cecilia María Marroquín Castro, the first candidate for proprietary magistrate, highlighted the importance of the TSE reaching out to citizens through information campaigns on suffrage. In addition, he proposed that the institution receive greater powers to propose legislative initiatives and that the resources of the Electoral Organization Directorate be strengthened.
Máximo Zaldívar Calderón agreed on the need to strengthen the institution to comply with international standards and improve transparency. “Citizens are increasingly demanding; A quick and effective response to their demands is required,” he said.
For his part, Julio César Deras Oliva proposed the implementation of electronic voting in the 14 departments of the country to facilitate voting.
Among the candidates for substitute magistrates, María Ofelia Landaverde Dubón emphasized the need to modernize and purify the electoral registry, as well as eliminate bureaucratic barriers that limit processes. “It is essential to carry out permanent consultations with citizens,” he said.
Irvin Antonio Castillo highlighted the importance of voting from abroad, given the number of Salvadorans abroad. Committing to strengthening transparency and security in the electoral process, he emphasized the need for the results to be quickly accessible to the population.
Finally, Elmo Atilio Pereira Quintanilla focused on making the electoral process more efficient, seeking to make elections faster and more reliable for citizens.
The election of the new TSE judges is a crucial step to ensure the integrity and effectiveness of the electoral processes in the country, in a context where citizen trust in institutions is fundamental.
