Political tensions surrounding the local body elections in Andhra Pradesh erupted into violent street clashes on October 16, 2026, as rival political factions traded blows with stones and sticks during candidate nomination filings in Punganur.
The nomination process for local municipal elections turned chaotic when supporters of the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA) alliance and the Yuvajana Sramika Rythu Congress Party (YSRCP) clashed in the streets of Punganur, located in Annamayya and Chittoor districts. What was intended as a routine administrative filing process quickly disintegrated into a running street battle featuring thrown stones, broken vehicle windshields, and head injuries among political workers and leaders alike.
Nomination Rallies and the Clash at Punganur
The confrontation ignited when YSRCP members marched in a large rally alongside party candidates to file their nomination papers. Rajampet MP Mithun Reddy accompanied the party faithful to the government junior college office to enter the nomination center.
Opposition Telugu Desam Party (TDP) and NDA alliance workers sought to block the YSRCP procession from reaching the intake center. According to local reporting, the political friction in the constituency runs deep, with TDP leaders determined to challenge the local political influence of senior YSRCP figures and prevent uncontested filings across the municipality’s 34 or 36 wards.
Verbal shouting matches at the barricades escalated rapidly into physical violence. Rival groups surged past gates and targeted the MP’s convoy with heavy stone pelting and wooden clubs. Vehicles were smashed and left with shattered windows as the main thoroughfares of Punganur took on the appearance of a battlefield.
Injuries Sustained by MP Mithun Reddy and Political Workers
The ensuing melee left multiple individuals from both sides with severe injuries. Rajampet MP Mithun Reddy suffered a head injury accompanied by heavy bleeding after being struck during the assault on his convoy. Security personnel quickly intervened to pull the lawmaker away to safety.

As the violence rippled outward, counter-attacks by outraged YSRCP supporters resulted in injuries among opposition ranks as well. A prominent TDP leader, Madhu, sustained significant bleeding injuries during the pitched street fighting. More than ten vehicles suffered extensive damage, with shattered glass and scattered stones left littering the pavement as frightened residents fled indoors.
Police Intervention and Current Security Measures
Law enforcement personnel attempted to restore order as the chaos mounted. Police forces on the scene fired shots in the air and pushed opposing factions away from the municipal offices. Observers and political representatives criticized the initial police response, with YSRCP organizers alleging that authorities failed to take adequate preventative measures despite clear warnings of high tension ahead of the nomination filings.

Local police have registered cases regarding the violence and launched active investigations into the clashes to identify participants on both sides. With public anxiety running high over the security climate, residents and local commentators have raised concerns about how authorities will manage law and order when actual polling takes place.
