Batticaloa District Member of Parliament I. Chanakian has accused the Minister of Justice of Prisons of being unconcerned with the incident in which a political prisoner was assaulted in Magazine Prison.
He mentioned this while addressing the media following the executive meeting of the district branch of the Sri Lankan Tamil Rasha Party in Batticaloa.
He further commented,
List of political prisoners
The bar relates to political prisoners in prison. A few of them were not taken in by the government as political prisoners. The Anti-Terrorism Act does not include some of those arrested as political prisoners and says otherwise.
Last week an inmate known as Morris was assaulted at Magazine Prison. He was arrested and detained on suspicion of the Central Bank bombing.
In the past, those arrested under the Prevention of Terrorism Act and political prisoners were kept in a separate section in this magazine prison.
Insecurity
Currently, those arrested for other crimes are also detained in that section.
The inmates there attacked this Maurice together. This is a matter of concern. I am going to Magazine Prison next Tuesday to inquire about his welfare.
They are insecure in prison. R. Chanakyan has pointed out that this is his concern as the Prisons and Justice Minister.
