The Ecumenical Council of Christian Churches of Madagascar (FFKM) once again received the candidates for the next presidential election yesterday at the Anglican church of Ambohimanoro.

The FFKM said church leaders were able to speak with the 13 presidential candidates. An approach which is part of a discussion aimed at ensuring a climate of stability and peace in the country, before, during and after the presidential election, scheduled for November 9.

“Discussions are currently continuing and everyone agrees to dialogue,” affirmed Pastor Denis Rakotozafy, president of the Lutheran Church of Madagascar (FLM), when reading the declaration of the four church leaders yesterday. Andry Rajoelina was not present in Ambohimanoro but the FFKM revealed that it met him last Wednesday, without giving the details of the meeting.

While awaiting the continuation of the mediation, the FFKM launched an appeal for appeasement. He asked political actors to refrain from gestures or steps that could block exchanges.

Last Tuesday, the FFKM already met the collective of candidates following their demonstration repressed by the police. At the end of the meeting, the collective of candidates announced a one-day break for their movement.

However, the truce would not have been short-lived; yesterday, the demonstration continued in the streets of Ampefiloha in Andavamamba. No clashes or confrontations were noted despite the presence of the police who patrolled the demonstrators in the streets. This morning, a demonstration is planned around Rasalama college, the collective invited the demonstrators to dress in white for the occasion.

Another march is planned next Saturday in the capital, according to several sources. The starting points will be multiple, depending on the details and the arrival point is not yet well determined. Opposition deputies have informed the Prefecture that they will take over the Place du 13 Mai also this Saturday, under the pretext of presenting a report on the activities of the National Assembly to the population. Unsurprisingly, the Prefecture rejected the request and directed them to Atsimondrano, more precisely to the premises of Magro Tanjombato.
