Cartoonist Jean Galvão says he understands the outrage on the networks and made a post to explain his drawing

Politicians and other internet users criticized the cartoon about the victims of the floods in Rio Grande do Sul published by the newspaper Folha de S.Paulo on Sunday (May 5, 2024). The drawing was created by Jean Galvão, who apologized on his social networks.

The illustration shows a family on the roof of a house, almost submerged, trying to protect themselves. The father looks at the sky trying to spot a possible helicopter rescue. One of the children says to another, who appears to be sad: “Don’t cry, it will flood even more”.

The federal deputy Daniel Freitas (PL-SC) said that the cartoon was “scoundrel” e “in poor taste”.

The São Paulo councilor Rubinho Nunes (União Brasil) declared the Sheet fez “laughing at the gaúcho children”. According to him, the post “it reveals a total mockery of the pain of a people who help feed Brazil”.

Artist apologizes

In your profile on Instagram this Monday (May 6, 2024), Jean Galvão apologized to people who were angry with the drawing. The artist said that the intention of the cartoon was not to make a joke, but rather to prove a point.

“I tried to show that, if this crying could be measured, her tears would be much more voluminous than any amount of rain that fell over Rio Grande do Sul, such is the pain they are going through”he stated.
