Saaremaa parish elder Mikk Tuisk said at a meeting of the parish council on Thursday that the contamination got into drinking water in Kuressaare, most likely from a sewer line that was being repaired, writes BNS.
“During the reconstruction of the sewer route, the water main was damaged. It was one of the two main thoroughfares of the city, a pressure line,” Tuysk said.
According to him, at first they did not consider the sewer line as a source of pollution, because the engineers who examined the accident site said that 300 cubic meters of water poured out of the water pipe. “They assumed that if such a large amount of water leaked out, nothing could get into the pipe itself,” he said.
Water intake points of the fire brigade are also connected to the water main. “When the pressure in the highway dropped, at first they suspected that contaminated water could get into the water supply network from there,” Tuysk said.
Later it turned out that the pressure fell throughout the city, the pipe was empty and a vacuum formed in it. “Supposedly contaminated soil and human excrement were sucked into the highway, and this pollution started from there,” Tuysk explained. “I make assumptions, the final truth will be revealed during the examination.”
Tuisk assured that monitoring of drinking water continues daily in Kuressaare. Chlorine is added to the water to keep it clean.
