Polyclinic of Milan, over 100 interventions with Versius robot

by time news

Over 100 surgeries performed with the Versius* robotic system in less than two years: this is the milestone achieved by the Milan Polyclinic thanks to the technology developed by Cmr Surgical, a global medical device company dedicated to transforming surgery. The hundredth procedure – communicates the company in a note – was a thymectomy, or the removal of the thymus, a gland that resides in the thoracic area, adjacent to the heart muscle, and which partially covers the aortic arch: a particularly delicate area, therefore where accuracy is key. The advantage of using a robot in this type of intervention is its ease of reaching particularly limited work spaces. Furthermore, the use of minimally invasive surgery has various benefits such as faster recovery times, fewer scars and reduced post-operative pain.

The Milan Polyclinic is one of the largest healthcare facilities in Lombardy – recalls Cmr Surgical – and within it the Versius platform, installed at the end of 2021, was used with the intention of developing a multi-specialist program involving thoracic surgery and general surgery. In fact, to date the robot has been used in 60 thoracic surgery procedures and 40 general surgery procedures, performing procedures such as cholecystectomy, low anterior resection and lung resection. Thanks to a small and modular design – reads the note – Versius is suitable for the layout of almost any operating room and can be moved easily between hospital wards. It is essential for surgeons to be able to move the robot’s arms freely even in small spaces, thus adapting to the surgeon’s needs, the needs of the specific operation and the anatomy of each patient.

“The result achieved demonstrates our dedication to the use of the most advanced technologies, to offer our patients increasingly cutting-edge and top-quality treatments”, says Mario Nosotti, director of the Complex Structure of Thoracic Surgery and Lung Transplants of the Polyclinic from Milan. “Flexibility, precision and the ability to perform the most delicate procedures in a safe way – underlines Lorenzo Rosso, surgeon of the same SC, who together with Nosotti performed the hundredth operation with Versius – are the main reasons why we are enthusiastic about using minimally invasive surgery platforms”. Franz Mazzone, General Manager Italy of Cmr Surgical declares: “Congratulations to the doctors and surgical teams of the Milan Polyclinic for having reached this important milestone. Versius was designed to allow surgeons to perform a greater number of minimally invasive surgery operations, thus to be able to offer an increasing number of patients the opportunity to access surgical care of the highest quality. We are delighted to be able to work alongside excellent hospitals such as the Policlinico di Milano, who share our mission to improve healthcare options for citizens, and we are confident that the future results of this collaboration will be equally positive”.
