Poma de Girona is looking for new markets at one of the main fairs in the sector

The companies of the Protected Geographical Indication (IGP) Girona apple (Fructícola Empordà, Girona Fruits and Giropoma) participate in Fruit Logisticaone of the most important European fairs for the sector that takes place in Berlin from February 8 to 10.

Jaume Armengol, president of Poma de Girona and vice-president of Fructícola Empordà, explains that the fair “serves to introduce you to the world”. Armengol claims that the fact that the event is held during the sector’s season means that no sales are made during the fair, since the purchase and sale of apples is already agreed, however, the event is a hoard for the sector.

In this year’s edition twenty Catalan companies and entities linked to the fruit sector participate in Fruit Logistica. As detailed by the Department of Climate Action, “the objective of this action is to support companies in improving their positioning in foreign markets and in establishing new commercial contacts. Hence the participating Catalan companies present themselves in Berlin as part of one of them most important fresh produce distribution markets in southern Europe and an example of quality production and work».

60,500 tons of pomes

IGP Poma de Girona closed the year 2022 with a production of 60.518 tones, a figure that has slightly increased compared to 2021, as detailed by Jaume Armengol. IGP Poma de Girona grows four types of apples with the Protected Geographical Indication; la Golden, la Gala, la Granny Smith i la Red Delicious.

Of these, the main apple is the Golden. In 2022 Poma de Girona produced up to 24.082 tons of this type of apple. It is followed by the Gala with more than 16.500 tones, la Granny Smith (12.794 tones) i la Red Delicious (7.102 tones).

Armengol explains that the sector maintained sales in 2022 compared to previous years. “This year we are optimistic, within the economic context with the increase in costs», he assures. In addition, the president of Poma de Girona, explains that this 2023 they hope to be able modernize the facilities.

He 90% of the Poma de Girona IGP production is sold on the national market, that is to say supermarkets, mainly. Between 6% and 8% of the apples are sold in central markets, com Mercabarna, Mercagirona, Mercasevilla… Finally, between 2% and 4% of the products are exported. The Counting Unit remains the most important foreign market despite Brexit. In addition, countries such as: Israel, Colombia, Peru or Saudi Arabia they are other of the main buyers of Girona apples.
