The release date of Ponniyin Selvan 2, which is much awaited by the audience, has been announced. Directed by Mani Ratnam, the film will release in theaters on April 28, 2023. The first part of the film, Ponniyin Selvan 1, hit the theaters in September this year. The first part of the film was a huge success at the box office. Ponniyin Selvan 2 is also expected to be a huge success and audience appreciation.

Ponniyin Selvan 1 had grossed over 400 crores at the box office. 318 crores from India and 164 crores from overseas markets. 200 crore film earned from Tamil Nadu alone. Total profit from Tamilnadu is 215 crores. 23 crores from Telugu states, 27 crores from Karnataka, 24 crores from Kerala and 29 crores from North India.

Jayam Ravi has come as the title character. Karthi, Vikram, Jayaram, Trisha, Aishwarya Rai, Prabhu, Parthipan, Aishwarya Lakshmi, Prakash Raj, Lal, Rahman, Riyaz, Khan, Khishor, Sobhita Dhulipala and others have acted in the film. Karthi has played the role of Vanthiyathevan. Vikram played the role of Aditya Karikalan. The film stars Aishwarya Rai as Nandini, the queen of Pazhuvur, and Trisha as Kundavai princess.
In the first part of the film, over forty eight main characters were introduced to the audience. Now the real story is to be told in the second part. Ponniyan Selvan is a novel about the crises, struggles, sacrifices and achievements of the Chola emperor in the 10th century. The film is based on the story of Arulmozhi Varman and the Chola dynasty. The novel is written in five parts. Films were tried to be made based on the same novel earlier. MGR tried to make this film in 1958 but later abandoned the attempt. Poniyin Selvan is a long time project of Mani Ratnam. Efforts to make the film started in 2012, but it was shelved due to financial difficulties.
