Writer Jayamohan has written about how Mani Ratnam wanted to make Ponni’s Selvan.
Director Mani Ratnam has filmed Ponni’s Selvan story, a famous historical novel written by author Kalki.
Vikram, Karthi, Jayam Ravi, Vikram Prabhu, Sarath Kumar, Prabhu, Jayaram, Rahman, Aishwarya Rai, Trisha, Aishwarya Lakshmi and many others have acted. Mani Ratnam, Jayamohan and Kumaravel have jointly created the screenplay of the film. Lyrics – Jayamohan, Music – A.R. Rahman, Cinematography – Ravi Varman, Art – Thota Dharani. Ponni’s Selvan released on September 30.
Ponni’s Selvan on its first day worldwide collected Rs. Madras Talkies has announced that it has collected 80 crores. It is said in the advertisement that it is the highest grosser for a film in the Tamil film industry.
Jayamohan, one of the film’s screenwriters and writer, has said on his website about Ponni’s Selvan film:
While planning Ponni’s Selvan, it was decided that it should not be an artificial technical film but should be completely realistic. Images created by graphic technology create awe at first sight but become a joke within a year. This is history, and it is our disgrace that it should be so.
Graphic techniques (special effects) become old in a few years. Too much can be funny. Mani Ratnam said that this film should not be outdated by at least twenty years, the next generation should see it. So graphics are used only to create reality and not to exaggerate. Nothing is exaggerated, including war.
He was sure that the scenes should not be over-dramatic and over-adventurous. He hunted down the slightly exaggerated ‘heroic’ scenes in my writing and removed them one by one. It won’t be all goosebumps. It’s just a consistent discipline.
This is Mani Ratnam’s dream. He said it should last over time. Today’s casual viewers may be disappointed by the incredible adventures done in conventional graphical techniques. But he thought that the film should pass the time by those who watch it again. It happens. He wrote that especially by the mass of women.
