Poopara Encroachment Eviction: Prohibitory Order Issued and Controversy Surrounding the Process

Thodupuzha ∙ Evacuation of 56 buildings including houses and shops on the bank of Panniar River in Poopara has started. Employees have been given time to move items out of the storerooms. After this the notice will be posted and the seal watch will be closed. Steps will be taken to demolish the illegal constructions later. Revenue officials clarified that people will not be forcibly evicted from their homes.

Prohibitory order has been announced in Poopara as part of the measures. The eviction action is following the High Court order. The revenue department has also sought police security for this. But the Action Council has come forward with the position that encroachment and eviction will be prevented. Action Council President Babu Varghese pointed out that the 45 days allowed by the court have not passed.

Locals claim that Poopara is not encroachment and the move to evict those who have migrated here since 6 decades ago and built houses and shops for livelihood will create far-reaching consequences. It is also alleged that the revenue department did not take any action while the construction was going on and portrayed the migrant commoners as encroachers.
