Yórgos Lánthimos’ latest film about a female version of Frankenstein won the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival on September 9.

The Venice Film Festival presented its final awards on September 9, 2023. “Poor Creatures”, the latest film by director Yórgos Lánthimos, received the most prestigious award of the Golden Lion, recognizing the best feature film of the edition. The Greek filmmaker has, once again, confirmed his stature as an author of the seventh art hailed by his peers, after having already received the Grand Jury Prize in 2018 for “La Favorite”, the Jury Prize at the 2015 Cannes Film Festival for “The Lobster” and the Cannes Screenplay Prize in 2017 for “Killing of the Sacred Deer”.

“Poor Creatures” therefore adds a new award to the director’s already flashy CV. This new fable tells the modernized story of a female Frankenstein. We follow the journey of a woman brought back to life by a scientist, who replaced her brain with that of a fetus. Eager to discover the world, she flees with a lawyer and begins her journey, demanding equality and the liberation of women. This surreal black comedy is the adaptation of the novel of the same name by Alasdair Gray, published in 1992.

In the casting, Yórgos Lánthimos brought together real stars. The Greek filmmaker finds Emma Stone, which he had directed in “The favorite”, here again in the leading role. The actress from “La la land” gives the answer to Willem Dafoe and Mark Ruffalo. The curious will, however, have to wait before seeing “Poor Creatures” in the cinema, since the feature film must, for the moment, be released in France on January 8, 2024.
