Pope Francis appoints the new Bishop of Punto Fijo in Venezuela

The Vatican Press Office reported that Pope Francis has appointed Bishop Luis Enrique Rojas Ruiz, until now Auxiliary Bishop of Mérida, as the new Bishop of Punto Fijo in Venezuela.

The appointment of Bishop Rojas Ruiz, 54 years old, was announced on Wednesday, July 12.

Bishop Luis Enrique Rojas Ruiz was born on August 31, 1968 in Mérida. He studied Philosophy and Theology at the San Buenaventura Major Seminary in that region.

He obtained a Licentiate in Pastoral Theology from the Pontifical Lateran University in Rome, and a Master’s in Psychology from the Pontifical Regina Apostolorum Athenaeum in Rome, as well as a specialization in Ecclesiastical Management from the University of Los Andes.

He was ordained a priest on September 15, 1999.

He has held, among others, the following positions: parochial vicar of the parishes of Nuestra Señora de la Regla, Santiago Apóstol de Lagunillas and Santa Rita; parish priest of the San Domingo de Guzmán parish and parish administrator of the parish of Nuestra Señora de la Candelaria.

He has been a formator of the Major Seminary of Mérida and parish priest of the parishes of Nuestra Señora del Carmen and Nuestra Señora de la Asunción.

He was also rector of the Santuario San Buenaventura and parish priest of the Immaculate Conception Cathedral in Merida.

Pope Francis named him Auxiliary Bishop of the Archdiocese of Mérida on June 9, 2017. He received episcopal consecration on September 29 of that same year.

Since 2022, he has been a member of the Episcopal Commission for Social Communication Media of the Episcopal Conference, a position he will hold until 2025.
