Pope Francis wants migrants to be “free to choose” whether or not to move and have “the right to remain in their own land”according to the mark in the title chosen by the pontiff for the next World Day of Migrants and Refugees to be held on September 24.

By Francisco’s choice, the world day will have as its motto “Free to choose whether to migrate or stay,” reported a statement from the Dicastery for the Service of Integral Human Development.

The choice of the title, it was added, seeks to “promote a renewed reflection on a right not yet codified at the international level: the right not to have to emigrate, that is, in other words, the right to remain in one’s own land.”

According to the Vatican organization dedicated to social work, “the forced nature of many current migratory flows compels careful consideration of the causes of contemporary migrations.”

Thus, “the right to remain is prior, deeper and broader than the right to emigrate. It includes the possibility of participating in the common good, the right to live with dignity and access to sustainable development; all these rights should be effectively guaranteed in the nations of origin through a real exercise of co-responsibility by the international community,” the note added.
