Pope Francis indicated this Thursday that he has received with “pain” and urged not to remain “indifferent” to the news of a recent shipwreck that killed 41 migrants, including 3 children, off the Italian island of Lampedusa, in the Mediterranean Sea.

“I have received with pain the news of a new shipwreck of migrants in the Mediterranean Sea. Let us not remain indifferent to these tragedies and let us pray for the victims and their families.” wrote this August 10 through your account on the social network X.

According to ansa news agencyfour survivors from the Ivory Coast and Guinea, including three men and one woman, arrived in Lampedusa in precarious conditions after being rescued by a cargo ship and then transferred to an Italian coast guard ship.

The ship would have departed from the city of Sfax, in Tunisia, a place known for being a center for migrant smuggling. In its attempt to cross the sea, the boat capsized and sank shortly after setting sail, as the survivors told the Italian agency.

The Agrigento city prosecutor’s office has launched an investigation to clarify the details of the shipwreck, because it is not known precisely if the accident happened recently or last week. The doubt arises from the survivors, whose stories have not allowed to establish a clear timeline.

So far this year, Italy has registered approximately 94,792 immigrant arrivals across the sea, according to the most recent figures from the Ministry of the Interior, last updated on August 10. This figure reflects a considerable increase compared to the 45,178 arrivals registered during the same period of the previous year and the 32,004 people who arrived in 2021.
