During a meeting with Pope Francis to mark the 25th anniversary of TV 2000 and In Blue 2000, the Pope spoke about the changes in media work. Papa indicated the danger that not only media workers but everyone may be washed away in the waterhole of radical transformation in information communication methods due to technological developments and the advent of artificial intelligence. Therefore, the Pope explained that their work with the Bishops’ Council should be seen as an expression of not less but greater freedom, because the roots of the communication media are based on humanity. The Pope then explained three terms to be aware of in their work as Catholic media workers.
Proximity
The Pope called them to work from the hegemonic logic seen in today’s world to a logic of proximity. Many discover new experiences, realities, and places by imparting information to and spending time with many. The Pope reminded us that this closeness should also reach the peripheries and that those who are never considered should become heroes in their broadcasts. Communication often bows to dominance and power and creates fake news. The Pope asked them not to fall into those temptations, to be “faithful to the call” and not to forget the marginalized and the neglected.
the heart
In the light of scripture and Christian tradition, the word heart is meaningful. Let us be close to others from a largeness of heart. It is the heart that is able to put aside the “ego” and make room for others, free from the chains of previous judgments and speak the truth without being separated from love. Therefore, the Holy Father said that we should not separate the facts from the heart and move with courage. A person with a heart can convey credibility without imposing his views on others. Everyone should be responsible for ensuring that every form of communication is objective, respects human dignity, and cares for the common good. Only in this way can we heal wounds, turn indifference into welcome, and create relationships, the Pope specifically reminded us. Their vocation is the calling of messengers who must impart knowledge with respect and authenticity to overcome divisiveness and discomfort. Therefore, the Pope concluded by wishing that the center of each of their broadcasts, carried out with closeness, heart and responsibility, would be the “human person”.
