Pope Francis prayed for Brazil | So that the country can free itself from hatred and violence

by time news

Four days before the second round of the elections in Brazil, the Pope Francis assured that he asked the patron saint of that country, Our Lady of Aparecida, to free the Brazilian people from hatred and intolerance.

Francis, in his general audience on Wednesdays, greeted the Portuguese-speaking pilgrims and in particular said: “I pray to Our Lady of Aparecida so that protect the beloved Brazilian people and free them from hatred and violence”. His words coincide with the final stretch for the second electoral round between the current president, Jair Bolsonaroand former president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva in the most polarized elections in the country since Brazil regained democracy in 1985.

The elections were characterized by a climate of tension between Lula da Silva, the big favorite in the voting intention polls, and Bolsonaro, who is seeking re-election.

The Pope, who greeted the Portuguese-speaking pilgrims, especially those from Salvador de Bahia, Anicuns, Taubaté and São Paulo, recalled the beatification of Benigna Cardoso da Silva. And he praised the example of “This young martyr who, observing the word of God, kept her life pure, spreading her dignity and asked that her life help to be generous disciples of Christ.”
