In a telegram of condolences sent this Friday on behalf of Pope Francis and signed by the Cardinal Secretary of State, the Holy Father expresses his “deep sadness” over the devastating effects of a fire that took place at a Christian wedding held in Qaraqosh (Iraq). ), where at least 114 people lost their lives.
On the night of September 26, a fire consumed an event hall in Qaraqosh, known as Al Haitham Hall and located east of Mosul, during a wedding celebration that brought together approximately 600 attendees.
Iraqi Civil Defense and witnesses reported that the flames had been caused by fireworks launched while the bride and groom were dancing. The guests panicked and rushed towards the exits. In the midst of the chaos, burning decorations and pieces of the ceiling rained down on them, ending their lives. In addition, the fire left at least 200 injured.
