Pope Francis will pray the Angelus prayer in private on Sunday, following the advice of his doctors, according to the Holy See Press Office this Saturday, June 10.

“Following the instructions of the medical staff and the personal health assistant, and as can be deduced from the normal postoperative process in operations of this type, the Pontiff will pray the Angelus prayer in private tomorrow, uniting himself spiritually, with affection and gratitude, to the faithful who wish to accompany him, wherever they are”.

This was stated by the director of the Holy See Press Office, Matteo Bruni, at noon, at a press conference from the Agostino Gemelli Polyclinic, where he assured that “Pope Francis’ postoperative course continues to be normal.”

Therefore, the Pontiff will not preside over the Angelus this Sunday, June 11, from the balcony of the tenth floor of the Gemelli Polyclinic on the advice of Dr. Sergio Alfieri, who operated on him, and his personal nurse Massimiliano Strappetti.

Third night at Gemelli Hospital

In the first report issued this morning, the Press Office noted that Pope Francis spent “his third night well” at the Gemelli Polyclinic after the June 7 operation, a laparotomy and plastic surgery of the abdominal wall with a prosthesis.

“In recent days all IVs have already been suspended and the Holy Father is fed with a semi-liquid diet,” added Bruni, who appeared before the media in the company of Dr. Sergio Alfieri, director of the Department of Abdominal Medical-Surgical Sciences and Endocrine-metabolic.

In today’s second report, the Vatican announced that the Pontiff “is without fever” and “haemodynamically stable.” “Postoperative blood tests and chest X-ray are good.”

“The Holy Father is undergoing a careful convalescence that is aimed at less tension in the abdominal wall, to allow the implanted prosthetic mesh and muscle fascia repair to heal optimally,” Bruni noted.

The Pope listens to the advice of medical staff

Doctor Alfieri argued that the Pope will not celebrate the Angelus in public following advice: “Nobody imposes anything on Pope Francis”, but an 86-year-old man with his government responsibilities, “if he wants to return to a normal life” and in “full of his activities”, it is better that he spend another week at the Gemelli Hospital, where “we can monitor the postoperative period”.

This medical decision is in line with the analysis of other professionals, such as the doctor from the Vatican City State Health and Hygiene Directorate, Luigi Carbone.

Likewise, Alfieri answered questions from the journalists present and confirmed that the Pope does not have heart problems. The other summer events on the Pope’s agenda are confirmed. “We know that it will be a sacrifice for him not to pray the Angelus, but it is prudent that we have asked him,” added Alfieri.

The Pope has resumed work and prays

During yesterday afternoon, the Pontiff dedicated himself to prayer and work activities, and at night he received the Eucharist.

For his part, on the morning of June 10, the Vatican Secretary of State, Cardinal Parolin, explained that “the Pope has expressed his desire to resume his work.”

During the “Not Alone” event of the “Fratelli Tutti” foundation, Cardinal Parolin informed journalists that “the Pope is well and that the operation has been successful.”

The Pope moved by the children’s messages

In the statement released on Friday, the Vatican also reported that Pope Francis is moved by the many messages he has received in recent hours.

The Bruni spokesman especially highlighted the Pope’s prayer for the children who are hospitalized and expressed his gratitude for the affection and affection received through drawings and messages.

The Pontiff expressed his gratitude to the children, as well as to the medical staff, nurses, socio-sanitary agents and spiritual assistants who daily alleviate the suffering of others.

In fact, on Friday, June 9, children and young people from the Gemelli Department of Pediatric Oncology sent drawings and letters to the Holy Father.

In one of the texts, in addition to wishing him a speedy recovery, it reads: “Thank you for everything you do for us and for having visited us several times; you are always welcome and we await you with open arms.”

The Pontiff was admitted on Wednesday after presiding over the General Audience, to undergo a scheduled surgery due to intestinal obstruction.

Because his recovery will take a few days, the Vatican has suspended all audiences until Sunday June 18 as a precaution.
