Poppy Tsapanidou to Fill Vacant Seat in SYRIZA as Party Faces Pressure to Preserve Representation for Diaspora

by time news

Popi Tsapanidou, the first alternate candidate on the SYRIZA electoral list, announced that she will take the seat following the resignation of Othonas Iliopoulos. “Taking into account the fact that the SYRIZA electoral list has been validated by the Greek people in two consecutive elections, I take on the utmost responsibility to respond to what the Constitution and the people’s verdict demand,” she emphasizes in her post. Reactions are expected within SYRIZA, given that there had been an attempt for all alternate candidates to resign in order for Stefanos Kasselakis to enter Parliament.

The SYRIZA parliamentary group will meet at 18:00 on Tuesday afternoon.

In her post, Mrs. Tsapanidou, former spokesperson for SYRIZA, mentions:

“A short while ago, I was officially called by the Presidency of the Parliament, based on what is stipulated in the Constitution, the electoral process, and the Parliament’s regulations, to replace, as the first alternate on the SYRIZA electoral list, the seat that has become vacant. Taking into account the fact that the SYRIZA electoral list has been validated by the Greek people in two consecutive elections, I take on the utmost responsibility to respond to what the Constitution and the people’s verdict demand.”

“The seat of the State list should remain with expatriates,” request organizations of SYRIZA abroad

“As expatriate Greeks and members of SYRIZA–Progressive Alliance in the member organizations abroad, we demand the continued representation of the Hellenic diaspora in the Parliamentary Group of SYRIZA-PS,” stated eight organizations of SYRIZA abroad in their announcement on Monday.

These organizations call for “all alternate candidates of the State electoral list to respect our wish and resign in turn, so that the parliamentary representation of the expatriate Greek community may continue and that SYRIZA-PS can have genuine representation in Parliament through its President.”
