One of the biggest computer failures in recent years caused major incidents around the world on Friday, affecting international airlines, railway companies, banks and telecommunications companies.
The failure, which was apparently caused by an update to an anti-virus program, also impacted the “computer operations” of the Paris Olympics, the organizing committee of the event announced, one week before the opening ceremony on July 26.
In a notice posted on its website, US company Microsoft said the problems began on Thursday at 19:00 GMT and affected users of Azure, its cloud platform, which controls the CrowdStrike Falcon cybersecurity software.
CrowdStrike CEO George Kurtz said customers were affected “by a flaw found in a content update for Windows users.” “The issue has been identified, isolated, and a fix has been applied,” he wrote on social media sites X and LinkedIn.
The company’s shares fell by 20% in premarket trading. The German government, based on information gathered by its cybersecurity officials, had indicated shortly before that the failure was due to a “faulty update” by the company.
