In another humiliating performance, Paraguay closed the Copa America with another defeat, this time against Costa Rica by 2-1. Once again, the Albirrojo team entered the first half asleep and received two blows that considerably complicated the game.
A shot from Ramón Sosa gave some hope in the second half, but it was not enough.
In the first half, at 3 minutes, Francisco Calvo put the “Ticos” ahead with a header after another horrible marking in defense. A nightmare that occurred in all the games and of course, again in this last presentation it could not be missed.
A few minutes later, with the Albirroja unable to react, Costa Rica struck again with a great goal from Josimar Alcócer, who brought the ball practically “from his home”, in the face of weak marking and defined strongly so that Rodrigo Morínigo could not reach it.
After the 2-0, Paraguay tried to react, with Julio Enciso being the most persistent, but unfortunately it was not enough. He made mistakes, yes, but he was the one who stood up for a team where there was not much to rescue.
In the second half, with Ángel Romero coming on, Paraguay showed something different and at least managed to get the goal back. After a great play by Mathias Villasanti, the ball fell to Ramón Sosa to score, who fired past the rival goalkeeper to score his first official goal with the senior team.
The Albirroja tried as best they could, with Ángel and Enciso as the best, plus the push in some plays by Omar Alderete from the back. Sosa again had the chance to equalise but goalkeeper Patrick Sequeira appeared with a great save.
As if that weren’t enough, luck wasn’t even on our side. In one of the last plays, Ángel Romero found a ball in the goalmouth to equalise but once again Sequeira saved it incredibly in what is surely one of the best saves of the Cup.
Paraguay said goodbye like this, helpless, aimless and unlucky, in a competition that will go down in history but in a negative way.
