Popular protests again in Colombo; People surrounded the parliament building

The protestors have stated that they will continue their protest until they resign. So far, the protests have been at the President’s palace, office and the Prime Minister’s office. Now it has been extended to Parliament House as well.

Colombo: Popular protests are getting stronger in Sri Lanka. People surrounded the Prime Minister’s office in Colombo. The army has also cordoned off security around the office. The Asianet News team in Colombo reports that thousands have gathered in front of the office.

People have intensified their protest after it was announced that President Gotabaya Rajapakse will not resign. No other option will be accepted unless the President resigns. The protestors have stated that they will continue their protest until they resign. So far, the protests have been at the President’s palace, office and the Prime Minister’s office. Now it has been extended to Parliament House as well.

The protesters were hoping that the president would resign today. But at the last minute the President put forward some measures. After this he crossed to Maldives. The people are very angry with Gotabaya’s move to hang on to power.

Sri Lankan President Gotabaya Rajapakse left the country in the midst of popular protests. News agencies reported that Gotabaya arrived in Maldives along with his wife Loma Rajapaksa in a military aircraft.

Gotabaya and his family tried to leave the country twice yesterday, but the passengers themselves stopped them at the airport. Then they escaped in a military plane. At first the plane was not allowed to land in the Maldives, but after the intervention of the Speaker of the Maldives Parliament Majlis and former President Mohammad Nasheed, the plane was later allowed to land. Rajapaksa had put forward the option of resigning if he was allowed to leave the country safely.

After Gotabaya left the country, the country is looking forward to who will be the new President of Sri Lanka. Opposition parties have agreed to nominate Leader of Opposition Sajith Premadasa as the new President.
