Sadness and indignation were expressed in Brazil over the death of Joca, a golden retriever who was sent on the wrong plane and lost his life due to heat and thirst. Even the Brazilian president spoke out in favor of the case and asked the airline to “be held accountable” for what happened.

The death of Joca, a golden retriever who was mistakenly sent on the wrong flight by the Gol airline, generated a strong shock in Brazil. The unfortunate event, which occurred on April 24, unleashed a wave of indignation and sadness in the country, even mobilizing the president himself, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, who demanded that the company “be held accountable” for what happened.

“I believe that Gol has to be held accountable and that the Anac (National Civil Aviation Agency) must supervise this… We cannot allow it to continue happening in Brazil,” declared the president during an event, who was wearing a tie with drawings of dogs on “ protest” for the death that occurred on Monday.
A fatal trip

Joca, 5 years old, had to travel from São Paulo to Sinop with her owner, João Fantazzini. However, due to an error by the airline, the dog ended up boarding a flight to Fortaleza, a journey of almost 8 hours, considerably longer than planned.

After arriving in Fortaleza, Joca remained locked in his cage on the landing strip for more than an hour, exposed to temperatures of 36 degrees, without water or food. Finally, he was reboarded on a flight back to São Paulo, but died upon arriving at the airport, presumably due to the extreme conditions to which he was subjected.

An irreparable pain

Fantazzini, devastated by the loss of his faithful companion, sued the airline for negligence and called what happened a “murder.”

The Anac reported that it has opened an investigation in which Gol will have three days to give a statement, and clarified that the airline companies are “responsible” for the transportation of pets “from boarding to receiving the animals.”

Gol, in turn, said he “deeply” regretted the death of the dog, a golden retriever named Joca, and announced that he was suspending the transportation of pets for a month to investigate the event, which he attributed to an “operational failure.”

According to Gol, Joca received treatment in Fortaleza before boarding again for São Paulo, but he died upon arriving at the airport where his owner was waiting for him, who has held the airline responsible for the “murder.”
