The Attorney General of the Republic and Head of the Public Ministry, María Consuelo Porras Argueta, held a meeting with the Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), Luis Almagro, in order to publicize the actions that this institution has developed in the context of the 2023 General Elections, especially related to the case called “Seed Corruption” and assured that the work of the institution is based on legality.

The Public Ministry told Almagro that the development of the second round of the electoral event will be guaranteed and stated that the work carried out by the institution is based on legality, “without biases or ideologies, respecting the rights of the victims, investigating with due diligence and reasonable deadlines for all complaints to achieve effective justice for all Guatemalans”.

On the other hand, it calls on people, national and international organizations that have evidence that proves the opposite of what has been legitimately investigated, to use the legally established channels to challenge or present exculpatory evidence, in respect of due process and the rule of law.

THE “SEED CORRUPTION” CASE IS DESCRIBED TO ALMAGRO

According to the statement, during the meeting, Porras spoke with Almagro in relation to the alleged illegalities that have been noticed through the investigation of the Corruption Seed case, where the alleged falsification of signatures and names on the adhesion sheets stands out. of approximately 5 thousand people; the adhesion of at least 12 deceased people; Assignment of the same fingerprint to several people, irregularities in the adhesion sheets. Actions that, according to Porras, “seriously violated the human rights of hundreds of Guatemalans.”

In the statement issued by the MP, they ensure that the Secretary General of the Organization of American States learned that “the case originated in the year 2022, prior to the 2023 general elections and is not intended to affect the electoral process as has been led to believe in disinformation campaigns whose sole objective is to hinder investigations and evade potential criminal liability.”

“The Special Prosecutor against Impunity reported the illegalities warned to the Supreme Electoral Tribunal on May 29, 2023, before the first round of the electoral process; however, it was not until July 11, 2023 that the Court sent the required report (…) and the Prosecutor’s Office made the requests before the comptroller judge, in respect of due process and the law.
